7 tips we’ve learned (so far) on our NFT Journey

By Karsten Ivey / KarBel Multimedia (Illustrator and Co-creator of the CryptoPeops NFT project)

I have been on this CryptoPeops NFT Journey now since April. In that time, I have made a few mistakes (probably more than a few), but I have learned a lot as well. I am by no means an expert and I still have a lot to learn. I wanted to write a post highlighting some of our experiences so that it may help someone else on their NFT journey.

1. DECIDE WHAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO CREATE

Decide what what type of project you would like to create. There are static art projects, animations, music, etc. Decide how many you want to create. There are projects that number anywhere from 1 to 10,000 to 20,000. Some projects have teams of people to help. You may only want to create a few or only one. It’s up to you. Some projects have a road map explaining to potential buyers what their plans are for the the future of the project. This includes release dates and any utilities they may offer. Whatever you decide, be flexible in your approach and be willing to adjust your plan if you feel the need to do so.

2. WHERE TO SELL

You’ll need to decide where you want to sell your NFTs. Some artists use different platforms to sell their work. Others use only one. I chose to use OpenSea to sell our CryptoPeops NFTs. Other platforms to consider include, but not limited to: Rarible, SuperRare, and Foundation. Research the platforms you like and choose what’s best for you and your project. Once you have chosen a platform you will be able to start creating your NFTs. Each platform may have a different process to mint. There also may be a cost associated with the minting process., so follow the instructions for that particular platform.

3. HOW TO SELL

When your work has been minted you can start selling your NFTs. There are a few ways to sell. The two most popular ways are fixed price or an auction. Decide what you want your cost to be for each piece. You can also set the royalties you would like to make when someone resells your work. This may be a bit different depending on the platform you use, so you’ll have to refer to that particular platform and their rules.

4. BUILD YOUR COMMUNITY

Building a community around you or your project is very important. You need to get the word out, so potential collectors will notice your work. I use Twitter and Instagram to promote my work. Twitter seems to be the best platform for promotion, including giveaways. I also have a Discord account. This is another way to engage your community and keep them up to date on what you are doing.

5. SUPPORT THE NFT COMMUNITY

Giving back is very important in building your own community. You can support the community by buying (If you’re able) liking, retweeting, and engaging with other communities and artists. Whatever you can do to support artists in this NFT Community will help everyone in the long run. Support can also come in sharing your experiences with others to help them avoid making the same mistakes you did or avoid scams. Having said that, I would say support artists or projects you truly like, but don’t expect to get back the same level of support you give them. You may not get their support, and that’s okay.

6. KEEP LEARNING

This community is still pretty new to most, so stay curious and continue to learn new things when it comes to NFTs. Then pass your knowledge along to help others grow. Twitter spaces have been very helpful to me in my growth. The knowledge I have gained has been tremendous and I still have a lot to learn.

7. HAVE FUN

You may look at other projects and get discouraged if your pieces don’t sell right away. I get discouraged at times, but I try to remember why I do this. It’s fun for me. It’s my release. It’s my passion. We are all artists at the end of the day doing what we love. Some of us were doing this for free and NFTs have afforded us the opportunity to earn money. If you believe in what you’re doing, keep at it. Keep promoting, keep learning, keep supporting, keep creating.
